Dubai stretches along the coast for a long way, and its main areas feel like different cities: skyscrapers and malls in Downtown, beaches and towers in the Marina, resorts on the Palm and souks along the Creek. Where you stay decides how much time you spend in taxis.

Downtown Dubai: the landmarks

Downtown is home to the Burj Khalifa, the Dubai Mall and the Dubai Fountain. It is central, walkable within its own district and on the metro Red Line. It is the most convenient base for a first, sightseeing-focused trip.

Stay here if: you want the famous sights on your doorstep and easy metro access.

Dubai Marina and JBR: beach and waterfront

Dubai Marina is a district of towers around a long canal with a waterfront promenade. Next to it, JBR (Jumeirah Beach Residence) has a public beach and a lively beachfront walk. The Marina has metro and tram stations.

It is far from old Dubai, so trips there take time.

Stay here if: beach time and evening walks by the water are a priority.

Palm Jumeirah: resort stays

The Palm is the palm-shaped artificial island known for large resort hotels with private beaches. It is a great place to relax, but it is isolated from the rest of the city and not on the metro.

Stay here if: this is a resort holiday rather than a city break.

Old Dubai: Deira, Bur Dubai and Al Fahidi

Around Dubai Creek is the older city. In Deira you will find the gold and spice souks. In Bur Dubai, the restored Al Fahidi historic neighborhood has wind-tower houses and museums. Traditional abra boats cross the creek between the two sides.

Hotels here are often better value, and the area is well connected by metro.

Stay here if: you want culture, markets and a more traditional atmosphere at a lower price.

Tips for planning your days

  • Group by area: Downtown and the Creek pair well on one day. The Marina and the Palm are another.
  • Use the metro: the Red Line links the airport, old Dubai, Downtown and the Marina.
  • Plan around the heat: in the hottest months, keep outdoor sightseeing for mornings and evenings.
  • Dress respectfully: cover shoulders and knees in traditional areas and religious sites.

Questions travelers ask
