Rome's main sights are spread over a fairly compact center, so where you stay decides how much you walk and how often you need the metro or a bus. The best base for a first visit lets you walk to most of your plan and keeps the rest a short ride away.

Here is how the main areas compare, and how each one fits a 3-day Rome itinerary.

Centro Storico: walk to everything

The historic center around the Pantheon, Piazza Navona and Campo de' Fiori is Rome at its most classic. Most major sights are within walking distance, including the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps, and you can reach the Vatican on foot across the river.

It comes at a price: hotels are more expensive and rooms can be small. The center has limited metro coverage, but you rarely need it here.

Stay here if: it is your first visit and you want to walk everywhere.

Monti: near the Colosseum, with a local feel

Monti sits between the Colosseum and Termini. Its streets are full of small restaurants, wine bars and independent shops. It is close to ancient Rome and has metro access at Cavour.

Stay here if: you want a lively neighborhood close to the ancient sites.

Trastevere: evenings by the river

Across the Tiber, Trastevere has cobbled lanes, ivy-covered houses and some of the city's best areas for dinner. It is beautiful at night, and busy.

There is no metro station, and rooms facing the main streets can be noisy late. Trams and buses connect it to the center.

Stay here if: atmosphere and evenings matter more than transport.

Prati: calm, near the Vatican

Prati is a residential district of wide streets next to Vatican City. It is calmer and more orderly than the center, with good restaurants and metro stops on Line A.

Stay here if: you want a quieter base or plan to spend a lot of time at the Vatican.

Near Termini: practical and well connected

Termini is Rome's main station, with airport trains and both main metro lines. Hotels nearby are often better value.

The area right around the station is busy and less attractive, especially at night. Choose the quieter streets toward Monti or Esquilino.

Stay here if: you arrive late, leave early or are on a tighter budget.

Plan your days around your base

Once you have chosen an area, plan each day around one part of the city: ancient Rome, the Vatican side and the historic center. Wherever you stay, you will spend most of your time walking, with only a few rides between areas.

Questions travelers ask

What is the best area to stay in Rome for first-time visitors?

The Centro Storico, around the Pantheon and Piazza Navona, puts most major sights within walking distance. Monti is a good alternative close to the Colosseum with a more local feel.

Is it worth staying near Termini station?

Termini is practical for airport trains and the metro, and hotels are often cheaper. The streets right around the station are busy and less charming, so look at the quieter blocks nearby.

Is Trastevere a good place to stay in Rome?

Trastevere is atmospheric and great for evenings, but it has no metro station and can be noisy at night. It suits travelers who like walking and dinner on their doorstep.
