The Bondi to Coogee coastal walk is one of Sydney's best-known walks. It follows cliffs and coves on the city's eastern edge and links a string of beaches, rock pools and lookouts. It is easy to do without a car or a tour.

The route at a glance

The walk is about 6 km along the coast and takes most people two to three hours with stops. Along the way you pass:

  • Bondi Beach and the Bondi Icebergs pool at its southern end
  • Tamarama, a small, steep-sided beach
  • Bronte, with a park and a rock pool
  • Waverley Cemetery, set dramatically on the clifftop
  • Clovelly, a narrow, sheltered bay popular for snorkeling
  • Gordons Bay and finally Coogee Beach

Which direction to walk

Starting at Bondi is the classic choice. You get the big beach first and finish at Coogee's more relaxed beachfront.

Starting at Coogee works well if you want to end with Bondi's wide choice of cafés and better transport home.

What to expect

The path is paved or boardwalk for most of the way, but there are stairs and short climbs between beaches. Much of it is exposed to sun and wind. Sections can close for maintenance or after storms, so check before you go.

The route is not step-free as a whole. Some sections between beaches can only be reached by stairs.

Getting there and back

Neither Bondi nor Coogee has a train station on the beach. Buses connect both to the city and to rail stations. Use Transport for NSW to plan the current connection at each end, because you will start and finish in different places.

Tips

  • Go early: mornings are cooler and quieter, especially at weekends.
  • Bring swimwear: the rock pools and bays are part of the fun.
  • Carry water and sunscreen: shade is limited.
  • Leave time: the walk is short, but the beaches make you want to stop.
